Vermilion Bird of the South (南方朱雀, Nán Fāng Zhū Què) is the original of One of Four Auspicious Beasts, namely Suzaku/Zhūquè, sovereign of Summer that lost his Beast Core in deathly struggle. Now, bearing the name of his descendants’ clan, Shen, he seeks to restore his core once again.

Appearance

3 parts beauty, 7 parts handsome; oftentimes, this is used to describe Zhūquè. He often wears white satin robes in his image of elegance and simplicity. Back in the days before the existence of his fire vessels, Zhūquè appears with a hint of harsh masculinity and sharp features. After slopes of time, however, his current fire vessel evidently retains the slightly sharp features although more affable; narrow upturned phoenix eyes, nose ridge high with gentle arch, and thin lips.

Zhūquè is a man who cares of his appearance; smooth black ink hair cascade down his back, dark eyes with a gentle hint of sweet brown hues at certain lighting.

The Vermilion Bird is elegant and noble in both appearance and behavior, with feathers in many different hues of vermilion. It is very selective about what it eats and where it perches.

Nothing remains still; that includes the auspicious beasts as well, their personality changing along with the change of time. For the Vermilion Bird in particular, after long years of blending alongside mortal, the immortal’s personality has softened down somewhat and as they said; much, much more bearable.

Background

One born for the sake of world’s stability, Suzaku is one of the four auspicious beasts, overseeing the season of summer, reigning over the element of fire.

Suzaku, Seiryū, Genbu, Byakko—all four of them born into existence each with powerful, omnipotent Beast Core. Some worship the power, some covet it greatly with the promised power it will bring. Being the number one under heaven is a matter of course as long as they can get their hands on that core. Yet, none also dare in fear of the calamity at the loss of balance. None, aside from those that have none to lose—demonic sect.

Those that dare soon become daring. Comes the rumors that said one of the Auspicious beasts bowed to heaven and ancestors with the number one female cultivator of the righteous Heavenly Mount Sect. Amidst the confusion of their sudden raid, they managed to successfully capture Qin Rulan and lured Suzaku out of his nest. He was shaken to core, however, by the sight that greet him.

They dare, they dared—!

They dared to cut her skins into thousands of cuts, using a spell to stop coagulation of blood, incise her flesh with their blades. By the time he arrived, she is already at the brink of death, face pale barren of life. By then, grief-stricken, it was no longer impossible to subdue the prideful Vermillion Bird with countless traps and spells they had planted beforehand. In the end, her silent pleas was unheard of—she can only helplessly cried in a hoarse voice “I am sorry, I am sorry,” repeatedly as she watch how they sank their fingers into his chest, ripping away the skin and flesh despite the blood soaking their entire arm and forcefully yanked out his burning core, not even caring as it burn their skin. And as it ends, as she cried herself voiceless, they slit her throat in a single stroke.

None but Suzaku saw how her broken soul scattered in the darkness of the cave by the effects of lingchi as well as her guilts. With the last spark of his strength, Suzaku sealed her fragmented soul in Soul Trapping Pouch and flee. This accident force Suzaku's soul to live in a fire vessel instead— mold from his feathers and eternal fires to cultivate his beast core once again whilst nurturing Qin Rulan's soul so that it can return to reincarnation cycle once again.

And so, when he meets her again, he can say, “I am sorry.” Currently, Suzaku's soulless body is stored in Yù Liáng (玉凉, Yù liáng) cave along with numerous secrets of the beasts. It is said that only heir and clan's head able to enter the cave, granted permission by Suzaku, however any scrolls are forbidden to be taken out.

Abilities

There are no spells nor barriers in existence that he has no knowledge of. Alongside with the other auspicious beasts, they share equal wisdoms. However, within his fire vessel and the lack of decent Beast Core, his power has been severely halved and more. Conjuring powerful spells proven to be quite laborious.

As the progenitor of fire, his body is molded from fire, healed with fire, and accept nothing but fire. Whilst he appears to be fully aware how to incite other elements forcefully, his vessel would vehemently refuse any trace of elements aside from fire, leaving him at the threat of qi-deviation. As the popular belief goes, fire is strongly destructive. However, in his hand easily become pliant, shaped at his will and at his call. He may also heal himself with fragments of burning fires.

Weapons

Yù ránshāo (玉燃烧 — Burning Jade), his core has been gouged out from his chest, fingers of unknown man sink into his chest as he teared the red, flaming and burning, core, forging Yù ránshāo as the result. With fiery temper due to the nature of his core, no one aside from Zhūquè is capable of wielding this sword. Once lost, however he easily regained this sword again for no one dare to wield Yù ránshāo, each time its’ unsheathed proven to be fatal as it requires blood to pacify it back–truly a weapon with bad temper. This fierce temper is also extremely deadly, because the power of higher being keep trying to swallow the lower one, causing any cultivators that acknowledge the sword as theirs’ and bestow it with a name slowly succumb into darkness, creeping slowly into their Golden Core and surely, dominating and feasting upon the delectable spiritual power until the cultivators become crippled. Befitting end upon the mortal that dare lay their hands upon the power of mythical, transcendent being.

Now returning to his rightful hands, resonating with his soul, the sword’s temper has been considerably milder now. Undoubtedly, forged with a mystical beast’s core, this is one of the strongest swords in existence. Each slash leaving a lingering mark of burning bird crest in one’s soul.

Combined with his powerful fire qi, one would hate to be slashed by this sword because at the same moment of swing, before even a spurt of blood fly, the skin immediately cauterized; painful beyond words. Might as well die from loss of blood.
